Three things I took away from the Gophers’ 63-49 win over NDSU at Williams Arena on Monday night:
1. Basketball should not be played on a Monday, especially in November. People need a couple of days to digest the football weekend and it’s just not a day where you say: let’s go to dinner, take in the game and then have a couple afterward.
2. The Bison are not deep right now. The first two guys off the bench are guards and I can’t see Smith, Winkelman and Moormann going the whole year like they did on Monday. Smith played 36 minutes and Moormann 33. Who’s behind them? Forward Lorenzo Riley, who averaged 12 minutes a game last year, didn’t play at all. Freshman Sam Sussenguth isn’t ready and Tom Lunde, who is more of a wing, is coming back from concussion syndrome.
3. If there’s any angst over NDSU’s play, don’t forget seven of the top eight players are freshmen and sophomores and this game was at Williams where, no matter how bad the Gophers are, they still should be a decent team at home.
