Jerve out until August; line shuffles around

NDSU offensive guard Jeff Jerve had surgery Monday for microfracture, which was one of the worst outcomes after he injured his knee last week in practice. Head coach Craig Bohl said he expects Jerve back in time for fall practice. It was initially thought that he could anywhere from two weeks to two months with meniscus damage.

His injured put in motion an offensive line shuffle that has Paul Cornick moving from right guard to right tackle and the guard spot a battle between Jesse Hinz, Joe Lund, Tyler Gimmestad and Ty Beckius. One will start at guard, the other at center.

“We’ll deal with it,” Bohl said.

Bohl said the 6-2, 290-pound Gimmestad’s move over from defensive tackle has gone well. “He brings something to the table,” he said.

  1. Is Boen Anderson in the mix for playing time? Seems he’s been on bench ever since he transferred from ND Science JUCO.

  2. Feel bad for Jeff but talked to him yesterday and he’ll be back. We’re deep at o-line. This gives some younger guys a chance to get some run there. And really it doesn’t matter as we have two NFL capable backs now that Sam is back. Plus a nice change of pace back. You could put me on the o-line and these guys would each rush for 1500 yards.

    • It doesn’t matter? Are you serious?

You don’t know a thing about football 03 if you seriously think a RB can get yards without an effective OL. Even one weak link makes for a line to go from being great to simply adequate. If you don’t believe that, go back and look at the tape of the UNI game last year and get back to me.

  3. As typical, NDSU will be razor thin at the OL. Bohl has a policy that if there are ever more than 5, experience FCS quality OL on the team: that’s wasted money that could be spent on “real” positions like anything defense.

Now Jerve will miss the rest of spring and any real chance to develop at least some depth is shot.

Other than Beckius, who was replaced last year by a true freshman Hinz, we only have basically 5 guys that can be depended on the OL again. The rest career back-up types (at this level) or guys who have potential but no experience.
