Comings and goings of Bison players

Losing cornerback Brendin Pierre wasn’t the only hiccup this month. Backup quarterback Esley Thorton underwent a minor meniscus procedure, but is expected to be at full speed in the first month of camp.

The downfall to the injury is he is missing some quality workout time this month. He will remain the No. 2 QB heading into fall practice behind Brock Jensen.

As for Pierre, he will remain in school and regain his eligibility. He’s a mechanical engineering major who perhaps took a couple too many upper level classes that were of the very tough type. He played as a true freshman, so he’ll have two years of eligibility remaining.

He’s the second major contributor to be lost to academics. Running back Mike Sigers will also miss this fall. Sigers has remained in Fargo this summer and word is he may try to regain his eligibility. Also look for the Bison to get running back John Crockett in the fall of 2012.

NDSU has had its eye on cornerback Bryan Shepherd for a while, probably since the day the Mavericks folded their program. The coaches like his size and say his athleticism on tape is pretty good. Cornerback Zach Colvin, a member of the 2010 signing day class, is expected to be academically cleared for the first day of practice. As of today, that hasn’t happened.

  1. That’s too bad about Pierre but good to hear that he’s going to stay in school and work it out at NDSU rather than trasferring out. CB is one of the depth concerns for the Bison this year. Hopefully Colvin can step up for Pierre but even without him I think it’s only Marcus Williams, Colvin, Aereal Boyd, and Christian Dudzik if you don’t count the true frosh or any new additions lie Shepherd.

  2. Not good, not good at all. The Bison spent last year with depth at DB, I think the first time ever in Bohl’s career. One year he had exactly four guys and got lucky there were no injuries. They did, however, only go 6-5.

  3. I called this happening before summer started. Kids trying his hardest, but could use a little help from elsewhere. Dedicating all your time to football and having to go to class is tough.

  4. Any surprise that Bohl’s recruits from Florida have not worked out, given his horrible track record in Houston?

Rabb left the team before contributing, Shaman had a good year and then was hurt and got in trouble and now Pierre has gone the way of Sigers. Bohl also brought in 2 db from Florida his first year here (2003) – their names escape me but neither was able to contribute (part of the reason Craig Dahl had to play his true freshman year).

So that’s 3 recruiting areas where Bohl has mostly flopped: Michigan, Houston and now Florida. He also hasn’t done much in Iowa or Chicago so far (remember that Walker, Drago, Mays, et al were recruiting by now St. Thomas head coach Glen Caruso, not Bohl).

His new projects are Nebraska and now including Kansas – probably another reason he likes this kid from UNO as he’s from Olathe – and Arizona. Time will tell…

  5. Phil Steele’s magazine has Holloway as 1st team WR and Billy Turner & Dan Eaves as 2nd team all mvfc. You didnt have them on your list.

Im not too concerned with CB with MWILL, Sheppard, Boyd and Pike. Jordon Champion out of Arizona might play day 1 as well.
