Some measurables

Here are some stats I was able to overhear, steal or count myself with Coulter Boyer, Matt Veldman, D.J. McNorton, Daniel Eaves, John Pike and Ryan Jastram at NDSU’s Pro Day today at the Fargodome:

Vertical jump: Boyer (30 1/2 inches); Eaves (34), McNorton (27 1/2); Pike (35), Veldman (35 1/2).

20-yard short shuttle: Pike 4.3 seconds, Veldman 4.2, Boyer 4.4.

60-yard shuttle: Veldman 11.3 seconds, Boyer 12.0, McNorton 11.88.

40-yard dash: Boyer 4.94, 4.91 seconds, Eaves pulled up, probable groin pull; McNorton 4.78, Pike 4.86, Veldman 4.66, 4.75.

3-cone drill: Pike 6.9 seconds, Veldman 6.9, Boyer 7.0, McNorton 7.2.

225-pound bench press: Boyer 13 times, Eaves 13, McNorton 13, Pike 4, Veldman 17.

  1. Wait so Veldman at 6ft 7 ran a faster 40 than DJ? I mean I didn’t think DJ was that fast, but still surprising. Veldman is looking better and better. DJ is not that good on paper. Its more what he does on the field that make him so good. I could see Veldman in the 7th round? DJ free agent try out maybe.

    • Just goes to prove how little a 40 time actually means when it comes to being on the field and playing.

  2. Based on numbers and comparing to combine numbers from similar positions, the only one to have a chance would be Veldman. He has some pretty impressive numbers here. Coulter’s were not bad comparing to other linemen around the country. Film review could hurt Veldman, as he was not dominating at the position but that could all be tossed out the window if he gets a tryout and has a good showing. I remember when Rohl, Wurzbacher, and several others in that class got tryouts. The next spring, most of them were banged up and back in Fargo. It is a tough business, but they all have a shot. I wish them all the best. One thing I like is that sooner or later, these scouts are going to see the work ethic from our players and players in this area, that eventually make it and do well. I would be curious to see how many Ga Southern, Sam Houston State and others players do on their pro-days and future.
    Good job fellas, Go Bison.

  3. The important thing is how many NFL teams were present? And which NFL teams were present.

  4. Yeah, Looks like Veldman has a great day. Good size on that kid too. Hopefully he gets a look.

  5. All these guys but Eaves will get a shot. Veldman will get drafted round 6 or 7. McNorton should get drafted late but won’t, he wasn’t even the best running back on our roster last year. I love how UND has to ride our coattails even for their proday. Can’t hold their own, have to send kids to Fargo. Nice 2nd rate program.

    • You do realize that a lot of schools don’t have their own pro day right? And there have been times in the past where our Bison players have went to UND for a pro day. All depends on who has the most pro prospects. But, if you feel the need to bring up UND go for it……

  6. Veldman is the only one of these guys that will get a serious look. His game day numbers are not impressive, but his numbers on pro day will measure up, especially his height and vertical. The two tight end set that a lot of NFL teams are going to and special teams ability will give him a better opportunity than the others.

McNorton’s career is done. 4.78 in 40 is slower than any runningback at the combine except two fullbacks. 260 lb linebackers run faster than that at the combine and 320 lb linemen have better verticals. If he played for Alabama or LSU he may still have a chance, but not coming from a DI-AA program.

Boyer is too small for a run stop defensive end, and too slow for a rush end our outside linebacker at 4.94.

Eaves has the size and may have a chance to make a practice squad somewhere, but still unlikely.

Pike is just too small and a bench press of 4 times at 225 lbs is almost embarrassing. Most high school football athletes at his size can bench press that much.

  7. Yes…professional German football league for the Stuttsgart Scorpions is making it big…living the dream. Who cares about the NFL or CFL? Making $200 a week in Germany for six months to play “professional football”!!!!
Great experience to go to Germany and play football, but more of a life experience than actually playing professional football.

  8. Veldman’s number suprise me. Was he that late of a bloomer? With his size and strength, why was he not dominant every game, multiple years. He had some great catches and down field blocking, but… I had heard he was a little bit of a timid sally for a few years, sure turned it around for the end.

I wish him luck and was hoping to see his cousin play, but already left the team.

    • Veldman was hurt most of the first 3 years he played. This is the first year he stayed healthy.

Hopefully he gets a shot in the NFL and makes the most of it.
