An Olympic dream from a mother’s view (and blog)

Forum photographer Mike Vosburg and myself spent Monday with the Smock-Thieschafer Olympic track story, which is about as good as it gets in track and field. Amanda Smock, a 2004 NDSU graduate, qualified for the Olympic Games in London by winning the triple jump at the U.S. Track and Field Trials.

We saw her work out at the track and field complex at Macalester College. We stopped in Melrose and talked with her mother, Beth Thieschafer, as well as other Melrosians. Look for these stories as the Games get closer. Anyway, Beth started a blog for the Melrose Beacon newspaper during the Trials and will continue it through the London Games.

You can view Beth’s blog here.

  1. I doubt that Forum Communications is sending the two of you to London; but I hope there is a lot of coverage here, in the paper, and on the news about Amanda’s Olympic journey. This is such a cool story for the community to have an olympian.

  2. I am amazed by the sudden interest in Fargo regarding the Olympics. During the past Olympics they were deemed a joke.

  3. Research has shown that alot more people follow the summer Olympics versus the winter Olympics. That’s why there is alot more interest now and the fact that you have an ex NDSU athlete as a sole qualifier even adds to the summer game interest.

  4. Didn’t Chris Regimbal cover the Winter Olympics for the WDAY/WDAY and the Forum?
