Bison Video Blog: Selection Show Recap

Well we now know the field of 20; NDSU does receive the top seed and will be home throughout, the stunner is the possibility of seeing SDSU in just a couple weeks. Jeff and I also would like to brag that we accurately predicted the field of 20 last night, in case you dont believe us, feel free to watch last night’s Bracketology. Here’s our recap show on who’s in and who’s out.

  1. The worst two play in teams are Bethune Cookman and Wagner. As a #1 seed you should get the winner of the worst 2 teams. Yes SDSU may have been one of the last at large selections but that doesn’t make them worse than the autobids from the weak conferences.

Hopefully the Bison work on that passing game this week and get healed up. I like the Bison after a bye in the game.

  2. Wagner/Colgate should be in NDSU’s bracket. Selection committee made a very poor decision there.

    That said, bring them on.

I like the Bison’s chances against anyone in the FD.

    • The bracket process was a farce. USD had no wins in the MVFC and one will all season, 31-21 over Colgate. It may be hard to be fair to eveyone but at least give it a try.

  3. Strap it on, play, and stop complaining. Take a look at the bottom half of the bracket. That’s a meat grinder, that the Bison luckily don’t have to go through. I hope the team isn’t as scared of SDSU as you guys are. It’s the playoffs, and every game is going to be tough.

    • Don’t think anyone is scared of sdsu good buddy. If you can’t see what the committee did you need your head examined. It was basically admitted in Kevin’s article that SDSU was positioned where it was because of a possible bus ride from Brookings to Fargo.

So a possible bus ride is a factor in seeding a Division I tournament. Absurd.

BTW, just because someone disagrees with a decision, doesn’t make it complaining. Kevin’s article eloquently proves that

      • NDSU v. Kansas in 2009 NCAA basketball tournament in Minneapolis=bus ride. NCAA basketball committee chose NDSU to this region based on location.

        • Now say Kansas had a bye in the NCAA basketball tournament and the teams they had to play following that bye were the winner of the 2nd place team in the Big 12 and the conference champs from the Missouri Valley and the seeded team lower than Kansas had to play the winner of the champs of the Summit League and the champs of the Southland Conference.

Do you think it would be fair that KU would have had to play the 2nd place team in the Big 12 when they had a high seed?

That is the true comparison, not NDSU vs. Kansas. The 2nd place team in the Big 12 vs. Kansas.

        • Comparing the basketball tourney to the fcs tourney is silly. Apples and Oranges. Was NDSU in the Big 12?

          • Bigtime used the comparison by saying NDSU playing KU was similar to what would happen if SDSU wins and NDSU plays them.

He is wrong. SDSU was the second place team in the best FCS conference in the country. Check the GPI as it has been all season.

      • There’s no such thing as seeding in the FCS playoffs beyond the top 5. After that they take the bottom 8 and make them play the 1st week but those are paired by geography, not by seeds. The NCAA makes this readily known.

On top of that, it’s the freaking playoffs! If you don’t want to play tough teams go to the FBS so you can play in the Little Caesar’s GIECO Meineke Car Car Bowl. If SDSU is that good the Bison would see them sooner or later so why not after having a bye week to rest and heal? Hoping someone else takes out a team before you need to play them isn’t the Bison way. Bring on the competition!

        • Just because the NCAA made it known, doesn’t make it correct. Why Wagner/Colgate to EWU? Why Stony Brook/Villanova to MSU? Seems like those are long trips for any of those 4 schools with NDSU being closer. It makes the #1 seed a sham

          • It’s still a flight to Bozeman or Cheney regarless whether they send SDSU/EIU there or Colgate/Wagner/SBU/Villanova there. The difference is they can bus SDSU to NDSU and that’s a guideline in the rules when it comes to pairing teams.

      • Gotta agree with mkjohn on this one. There appears to be alot of complaining IMHO. If we are to show we are not scared of SDSU then we should quit talking about it. It shouldn’t matter who we play.
NDSU has a good chance to get back in the Championship game if they play a clean game, no matter who the competition is.
The MVFC is a tough conference and maybe the toughest. You can look at all the numbers you want but now is the time to show how tough we really are. The season starts now. No more mental errors. We could have easily lost another game or two this season. We need to pick it up a notch right now and forget about why we are matched up with whoever it may be. I don’t care if we play someone 10 miles away or 1,000 miles away. We are the number 1 ranked team so let’s show it.

        Go Bison!

  4. I think we forgot that we won the SDSU game because of the last minute penalty by the SDSU “illegal substitution”. With this kind of inconsistent Bison offense I think we are in for a long cold sleepless nights

    • You forget NDSU was ahead at the time 13-10. SDSU scored a late garbage time TD to make the final score 20-17. If Bison aren’t up by 10 they don’t play prevent defense and give up that last drive.

SDSU didn’t do much offensively against the Bison. Their main accomplishment was an offensive lineman diving at Leevon Perry’s knee and knocking him out for the season.

      • On the final SDSU drive, the qb hit Grant Olson between the numbers with a pass, which he dropped. If Grant makes that interception game over. SDSU played a charmed game, NDSU not so much.

  5. The price for the MVC to get a third playoff team was making SDSU play through the Bison. I think this is more of a slight to SDSU than it is to the Bison.

  6. I am surprised and dissapointed the MVC commissioner is supportive of the committee’s decision to put two top Valley teams on a course to play each other right away.

      • Poor my butt! Apparently you’d rather have Rodger Thomas? The MVFC is a one sport conference, Patty is about as good add it gets when most of the schools in the Conf are more concerned about BB revenue.

  7. Sure, it may look like an unfair draw for the Bison. I like a matchup against a somewhat quality team rather than a cupcake coming into the dome and pounding them 59-3. I agree with MKJOHN’s comments about some of you looking scared to play SDSU. I love the Bison as much as anyone, but lets stop talking about the Bison getting “hosed”, like Jeff said, and move on and play football. If anyone got hosed I think it would be a team like SDSU. They have a good team and would have to play the number one team in the nation for their second game. Don’t give SDSU extra confidence by appearing to be nervous about a second game against them.
Lets show some confidence in our team and quit acting like we don’t like our matchups. If we are truly the number one team, we should show no signs of being upset about any matchup. We should use the committee’s decision as a way to get fired up and roll on to a second National Championship in FCS.

    GO BISON!

    • Like the SDSU team is going to gain extra confidence because of fans discussing a seeding process. Absolutely silly.

No one is scared of SDSU. I guess if you can’t see what happened, oh well. Discussing the seeding process in a forum isn’t being scared

      • Steve,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t SDSU one of the last teams selected to get a chance to play on? Whether you agree with the committee’s assumption of SDSU being one of the bottom teams or not, they thought they were a lower seed. We did not get “hosed” if we are playing a near bottom seed.
I’m not overly excited to have to play them either but who cares? If we beat them, then the playoff process continues and we move on to one of the so called “cupcakes”. If we lose, I guess the people who bought tickets to Frisco are SOL. Either way we were gonna have to face tough teams at some point. Why not do it after an extra week of rest and practice?
Win or lose, there will always be someone second guessing and complaining.
I don’t think our team is scared of any team, but it appears some of the fans don’t have full confidence in our team by the complaints about who we might have to play. It’s time for some of you fans to MAN UP and quit whining. I would rather meet a good team every round and beat every one of them all the way to the championship.

        • Fans like you talk big when its not you out on the field. Being the # 1 should have the benefit of playing a lessor team than SDSU. Its all about getting healthy and not getting injured. Its been a long season and we are banged up. Quit putting your ego in front of whats best for the team.

ps I really laughed about your man up comments. LOL

          • Quit making SDSU sound tougher than they are. They had a couple ok wins this year but nothing spectacular. They did not beat a single team that’s in the FCS playoffs. They lost to a 1-10 FBS Kansas team. I will give them credit for beating a good IND. St. football team. Other than that there was nothing spectacular other than playing the Bison tough. I think that’s what has some fans nervous. The only other MVFC team in the playoffs was ILL .ST. , who was not on the SDSU schedule.
I guess I don’t understand you blasting me about “talking big” or having an “ego”.
I have confidence in NDSU. But I also realize that even we are vulnerable. We have shown that more than once this year.
Did I miss something or did SDSU already win their first round game?

    • Sending a complaint to ESPN does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. If you want to complain, complain to one of the internet service providers in the area (save Midcontinent) for not picking up the ESPN3/WatchESPN package. All of the ISPs in the area know that WatchESPN is available, they just choose not to pick it up. If you want to complain, ignore the above comment and complain to the ISP you already pay for. Complaining to ESPN won’t do a thing.

      • No, that’s EXACTLY what ESPN wants everyone to do. Its extortion and I’m not going to be part of it. Find a bar someplace or another way to get it.

  8. This game will not be televised again due to ESPN3. Email espn and tell them this stinks. You can find their email address at the bottom corner of the espn website

  9. The NCAA’s running of the FCS playoffs is a joke. It is said SDSU was the last team to make the Field, but now the worst team in the Field HOSTS a playoff game because they just outbid another team. What a nice way to make money at other people’s expense. Then to tuck the playoffs away on ESPN3, thank you NCAA.

  10. This is so boring. We should just take a vote and declare a champion. Oh, FBS already thought of that.

  11. Patty v mvfc commish needs to go from paschalls suspension to not suspending #65 of sdsu for hit and sitting by idly while NDSU gets screwed and NO TV DEAL. Shes done nothing !

Ndsu/sdsu in division 1 playoffs makes it the BIGGEST RIVALRY GAME IN NDSU HISTORY ! What a way to play game #100 !

  12. Question: Is the bracket NDSU is in an NCAA payback for NDSU seemingly blowing off the petition/voter fraud ordeal and A.D. Taylor’s remark of “it’s not big deal?”

  13. Helloooooooo! Helloooooo! This is an Eastern Illinois team member, you know, the team that is playing SDSU this weekend. Can anybody hear me? Is this thing on? Hellooooooooo?

    • EIU has NO chance of beating SDSU. Does anyone on here know the last time an OVC conference member won a playoff game? I do, it was 1995. Since then most games they have been completely blown out, the exception being when Murray State got beat by UNI in 1996 35-34.

I repeat, there is NO chance EIU will be SDSU. The Jacks will completely dismantle them.

  14. It is one and done. Each game could be the last. Does not matter who it is, you have to beat them. This year we are the most hunted compared to last year when we were the 2nd most hunted, we have to just step up one more rung and give it all. Hope the boys get healed up and fans need to bring it in two weeks.
    Go Bison

  15. Why is this such a huge surprise to anyone? Anyone who took the time to read the selection guidelines would see that an NDSU/SDSU match-up is going to happen in the playoffs as soon as possible whenever only one of the two teams is seeded. The same will happen the first time NDSU and UND are in the playoffs together and at least one is unseeded. It will also be true for USD if they get in the mix.

Here are the relevant portions of the rules:
    4. The No. 5 seed and the seven unseeded teams receiving a first-round bye shall be paired with teams that are in closest geographic proximity;
    5. The remaining eight teams will play first-round games and will be paired according to geographic proximity and placed in the bracket according to geographic proximity of the top four seeds previously placed in the bracket;
    6. The NCAA mileage threshold for mandatory team travel via ground is 400 miles;
    7. Teams from the same conference will not be paired for first-round games or for second-round games when both teams are playing their first games of the championship;

It’s the last half of rule 5 and all of rule 6 that apply in our case this year. There are only three FCS schools within 400 miles of NDSU: SDSU, USD & UND. We share a conference with two of those. Get used to seeing these teams early in the playoffs whenever one of them makes it in with us. The only thing that will stop it is if both Dakota teams are seeded; that will force the committee to place both teams competitively rather than financially. But there should be no shock when the same thing happens next year and the year after that and the year after that. There shouldn’t have been any shock from the Forum crew even this year as this info from the NCAA has hardly changed since the playoffs expanded to 20 teams several years ago. (I believe they increased the travel cutoff from 350mi to 400mi shortly after the economy tanked in 2008.)

    • Evidently the comittee didn’t all agree on the guidelines. Youngstown St Ad and 2 others were against the possible early match up of NDSU/SDSU. You would think at a division one level money wouldn’t be the deciding factor considering the NCAA is not hurting financially.

    • It makes sense until you start thinking about either Stony Brook/Villanova going to Bozeman and Wagner/Colgate going all the way across the country to Eastern Washington. If we’re talking straight up geographic proximity, it would make sense for SDSU/Eastern Illinois to go half-way across the country to Eastern W. or the relatively short trip to Bozeman, and then make either Stony Brook/Nova or Wagner Colgate go half-way across the country to Fargo instead of all the way across country.

    • How does that explain east coast teams traveling all the way to Washington state to play Eastern Washington that are worse teams than SDSU?

I guess since they have to fly anyway fly them over Fargo to Eastern Washington and bus the #2 team in the MVFC up to Fargo.

      • Winner of Stony Brook and Villanova should be playing Old Dominion if that is the case. That is a bus trip too.

  16. With 20 teams and no more than 3 teams from a conferance, teams should not play conferance oppenents until the semi finals, Big Sky got screwed also with potential conferance match ups early.

  17. Hey Jeff or Dom,

What do you think will happen if SDSU rolls into town? Are they going to play for the Dakota Marker again? Or will it be like the playoff games in the 90s against UND where the nickel’s annual residence was decided only in the regular season?

    Go Bison!

  18. The way I look at it Cable One should be getting plenty of heat. They have had plenty of chances to pick up espn3 and have not worked anything out. That’s a joke especially considering last year what we went through during the playoffs.

    • Midcontinent is the answer I had Cable One and now have had MidCon for a couple of years . . . no comparison! Fargo needs to get what Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth already have! Go Bison!

  19. If this game happens it is huge for The Marker and Dakota Big Three college football. The Marker should sit this one out but it should be visible on the side line as the most storied and coveted college sports trophy in The Dakotas. I do believe the Dakota College Football Championship will be on the line. This is what Dakota Big Three College Football is all about: All the marbles. The game is already sold-out and will probably break its own record as the biggest sporting event in the history of the Dakotas.

        • NDSU football is it? I don’t think so son. The game is about competition. It’s the competition between the Dakota Big Three Universites NDSU, SDSU and USD that setthe stage for this game. SDSU @ NDSU for high stakes football on a national level. This is why so many wax elequently about the old NCC which was only D2. Now the stage is bigger, the trophies more meaningful, the stakes much higher. National and conference titles are important but what we are really talking about is the College Football Championship of the Dakotas: which team will have the bragging rights for another year. The Dakota Big 3 decide that and this game, if it happens, will have no equal in the history of Dakota College Football.

          • Its the Dakota Big Three man, its the NCC all over again this time in D1. Stand down my friend. You arent mad are you bro?

          • Mad? Good grief no. It’s just that in Bison Nation we have this one person freak show.

  20. This appears to be the same situation as last year when they attempted to used ESPN3 instead of ESPN GamePlan for playoff games. First the Montana congressional delegation got involved and then finally the ND people got involved and got the games moved. It’s time for your new Senator to get butt involved in the process.

  21. Dakota Big Three, Dakota College Football Championship, Conference title, national championship implications, college athletics dont get any better than this in the Dakotas! The Marker! The most coveted trophy in Dakota College Athletics! Give it a rest? Where do you come from my good man because it doesn’t get any better than this!

    • Jacks will pound Eastern Illinois. MIssouri Valley is a much better conference than the Ohio Valley. Eastern Illinois will not be able to match SDSU’s strength. Jacks-35 E. IIlinois.-6

  22. Could it be that the selection committee did not want two strong programs from the MVC in two different bracets because they would eliminate too many other teams they want o progress through the playoffs to build the FCS brand? By having these two teams play early it will solve their problem (i.e. a threat to other teams in the East and South being eliminated early). Just a thought.

  23. This potential early pairing of MVFC teams is no different than what has happened to Big Sky teams for years….get used to it.

  24. It’s a good pairing with the potential for the biggest college football game in the history of the Dakotas. All SDSU has to do is win.

  25. Our Bison defense can bring home another title. If we do lose a game along the way it will be because our offense gave it away.

  26. Let me fix their bracket based on close proximity games (the excuse used to pit SDSU against the Bison, possibly):

    Wofford vs Georgia Southern

Central Arkansas vs. Sam Houston State winner to play Montana State

Illinois State vs South Dakota State winner to play the Bison

Cal Poly vs Eastern Illinoii winner to play Eastern Washington

New Hampshire vs Villanova winner to play Old Dominion

    Colgate vs Stony Brook

    Wagner vs Bethune Cookman

I guess since it is the playoffs and you have to face the good teams eventually they may as well happen in the first 2 rounds huh? At least we would save travel money with this bracket.
