NDSU accomplished something on Tuesday that it never has in wrestlnig: a top 25 Division I ranking. The Bison were 24th this week in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. The impetus was a 24-15 dual victory last week over previously-24th ranked Boise State.
Individually, a couple of Bison are climbing in the Amateur Wrestling News weight class ratings. Senior Trent Sprenkle moved up to sixth at 125 pounds and junior Steven Monk is eighth at 165. Senior Mac Stoll is 17th at 184 pounds. All three are returning national tournament qualifiers from a year ago.
The University of Minnesota remained in first place in the top 25 with seven first place votes. Penn State was next with three votes. The Bison are sandwiched between No. 23 Purdue and No. 25 Old Dominion. There’s still some ranked opponents ahead for NDSU, which hosts the Gophers Saturday in the NDSU Quadrangular at the Bison Sports Arena. NDSU also has No. 15 Oregon State at home on Dec. 9. The Bison are at No. 7 Missouri and No. 19 Wyoming this season.
This is well-deserved and very impressive.
Awesome. Way to go grapplers.
Congrats Bison wrestlers and coaches. Recognition well deserved.
I was not a wrestler but have a huge amoumt of respect for anyone who has been one or been exceptionally good at it. Congrats to the coaches and the team for this great accomplishment! Remember Bison football got to 37th in the gridiron power index last year, I think that puts this in perspective. Rock on Bison Wrestlers!
Excellent! Keep climbing boys!
Wow. The new recruiting class was ranked 4 in the nation by open mat. That is not a misprint. The Gophers are 4. The future looks bright
Coach Kish was a great hire for the wrestling program.
He will continue to improve the program.
Great job.
This is bigtime.
Bucky laid the foundation and maintained it and left it in great shape for
Kish to build on even more.
Congratulations on the ranking and win the next dual.
Wrestlers rock!
I wrestled for Bucky in the early-2000s and I wasn’t too keen on the Kish hire at first, but he’s really won me over. The shift in mentality he’s already brought to the team impressed me at the Bison Open, and even more so at the Boise State dual. They have an different attitude and are finally looking like a top-tier D-1 team. I thought the turnout for the Boise State dual was really great, and hope to see a similar turnout at the Oregon State dual. Oregon State also features a wrestler at 125 (Pat Rollins) who won a couple of North Dakota state championships a few years ago.
Kudos to Kish for the work he’s done so far. I’m confident he can keep it going and push the Bison back up into the elite level.
Just imagine if the SHAC was built, whats the status its a shame the teammakers can’t raise the money for the project it would help wrestling as well as bball. Cmon man lets build this already
Were only a few million away from target. It will come. Before you know it we will be talking about upgrades to soccer, baseball, and a bubble/dome over the new field turf we bought
coach gable here, i am impressed with the rise of NDSU wrestling. Im a big fan of Bucky and now Coach Fish. Shock the world and beat #1 Minnesota and you will have made a name for yourselves, good luck.
+++++++
Are u kidding me..if Gophers choose/healthy, the meet will b a blow out. This is Fargo, inflated heads, always.
What are you talking about? The Gophs are ranked first, they should destroy the Bison. Nothing in the article indicates otherwise. It appears you have more of a deflated head.
Nothing in the comments or article said the Bison are going to beat MN this Saturday. The match will likely be a blowout, in fact.
NDSU does have a good chance for wins at 125, 149, 157, and 165, which is a great step in the right direction. Granted Dylan Ness is out for MN, but still, that’s much better than year’s past. I’m looking forward to a great day of wrestling
Go Bison!
Where is the football fanatics push behind the BSA? Are Bison fans football only? I didn’t think so, but am starting to wonder. We need to support the entire program for a healthy NDSU. Thankfully we have really good men’s squad to get some energy to take the project home. I thought Woodys group was laying the groundwork for Bjork and Braun, but now it’s for Jacobsen. Get it done bison fans!
20 mill or something has already raised. Thats not bad is it?
Great accomplishment, period! One caviot vs 37 in football, there are fewer wrestling squads vs FB. 37 = 24 in my estimation.
