FCS Pick ‘Em – Playoff Round 1

Well we all know how the regular season went down in this battle between Jeff and I but a new season begins tomorrow and now all the talk can stop and we’ll see what happens. For those that read the blog faithfully and have access, all of tomorrow’s games will be on ESPN 3. I’ll be at the station tomorrow tracking the SDSU-Eastern Illinois and Villanova-Stony Brook games, both should be very good. Good luck this weekend, hope everyone had a great holiday!

  1. ■Coastal Carolina at Bethune-Cookman – Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers
■Villanova at Stony Brook – Villanova University Wildcats
■Colgate at Wagner – Wagner College Seahawks
■Eastern Illinois at SDSU – South Dakota State University Jackrabbits

■Texas State at Texas-San Antonio – University of Texas – San Antonio Roadrunners
■Louisiana Tech at San Jose State – Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs
■Notre Dame at USC – University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish

    • Dom and Jeff:

Very surprised you both picked Colgate. The only scholarship team Colgate beat all year was Sacred Heart from the NEC which limits scholarships to 34. Every other win was over a non-scholarship program.

South Dakota, a team that did not whin a conference game in the MVFC beat them by 10 points.

  2. I like the WAC attack, time to start thinking WAC for NDSU and even possibly the Mountain West. keep pushing it, time for fargo and ndsu to put on the big boy pants and get out of the junior varsity fcs.

  3. Coastal in the first game.

The big game sets the stage for the biggest college football game in the history of Dakotas. #100! It doesn’t get any better than that. The storied history, The Marker, The Dakota College Football Championship, the MVFC title, national championship implications, recruiting you name it. It’s all part of Dakota Big Three College Football!

I’m pulling for SDSU and the big game in Fargo at the prestigious Fargo Dome, North Dakotas most famous sports venue.

  4. ■Coastal Carolina at Bethune-Cookman – Coastal Carolina
■Villanova at Stony Brook – Stony Brook
■Colgate at Wagner – Colgate, the team that South Dakota beat for it’s only win of the Season.
■Eastern Illinois at SDSU – SDSU… Eastern will need SDSU defenders to slip and fall a ton. This should be the best and most interesting match up of the first round.

2 Former FCS Teams playing one another

■Texas State at Texas-San Antonio – Texas State

    WAC Matchup Of Week

■Louisiana Tech at San Jose State – Louisiana Tech. Not a big fan of the WAC, which is barely better than the Sun Belt. The WAC is losing Schools, Idaho, Texas State and making up those loses with Schools without Football programs, Seattle, Denver, Utah Valley. Idaho is reverting back to the Big Sky and trying to be an Independent in Football, that should be the biggest warning about the WAC. Mountain West sounds a bit more appealing, but wow, there are some Monsters hidden in that Conf. esp basketball.

  5. Hey, if the Bison end up playing the Jackwabbits again, does the Marker come into play????
And for all of the talk of Mountain West and WAC, that isn’t much of a gain for NDSU; they could probably beat all of those teams now anyway. MVC is where it’s at! Plus Big Sky. C’mon – time to schedule UND, at least every other year.
Still looking forward to next August 31 – #1 NDSU vs. (maybe) #1 KSU!!!

      • I don’t believe it was up for grabs when they met in the playoffs. The Bison lost to UND during the regular season when Kevin Feeney was QB and the Bison turned around and beat them in the playoffs…the nickle didn’t change hands after the game.

Winning the playoff game and advancing should be all that is needed. That is a much better payoff than a traveling trophy.

      • Why cant SDSU move on. This is not a Dakota Marker game, this is the playoffs, so SDSU should just move on

  6. Traditionally the trophy has not been up for grabs except for the reg season game. The papers in South Dakota are talking about the Dakota Big Three. The question: Has NDSU become SDSUs main rival because the SDSU/USD game only drew 16,000? The conclusion: The Dakota Big 3 schools have enhanced the competition between these schools and SDSU probably needs a bigger stadium. Good grief! It’s Dakota Big Three football!

    • Big Ten Hockey: The clock is ticking. Your NDSU sports blog was shut down. You are banned from, among others, Bisonville, FCS and CFS. You are incapable of making a single post without it being full of half-truths, lies and completely false statements. You continually blow up and derail threads to make backhanded innuendo references to another Dakota school when they are not even being discussed. It’s just a matter of time before you are history here as well. I await that day. PS: You mad — bro!

      • Try the Mitchell paper. Watching Wagner handle colgate now 24-14. Its a fumble fest with Cent Conn. about to start.

What the Big Dakota Three have become is something none of could have imagined back when there was still resistance about the move. In fact some schools didnt move and others moved way late.

The Dakota Big Three carry on the tradition. USD isnt in it this year but they are building with a great coach familiar to the Dalotas and the competition and tradition shared by the Dakota Big Three.

The Second SDSU game, should it happen, will be a huge event for Dakota College Big 3 Football and the MVFC with Natioanal Championship implications and the bragging rights as best college football team in the Dakotas on the line. It will probably break its own record for biggest sporting event in the history of the Dakotas.

There is no trophy for that yet and I dont believe the Border Marker will be up for Graps should we have SDSU 2 at the Prestigious Fargo Dome, the most popular and storied sports venue in the Dakotas.

Dont get mad bro, get glad! The Dakota Big 3, its huge!

          • Hey bro, you seem mad?

Jacks just got another TO, lead 57 – 10 and are headed to the Prestigious and Fabulous Fargo for the Biggest football game in the history of Dakota College football! #100. MVFC championship! Best college football team in the Dakotas! Virtual Dakota Marker, the most storied trophy in Dakota College Football history! Braging rights! All the marbles!

  7. Boy who would have guessed the 2nd place team from the MVFC would destroy the champion of the OVC? Hard to imagine that the second place team from the MVFC would be that good huh. Top rated conference all season long and the power of the conference was on full display by the Jacks this weekend.

  8. MVFC received no respect from the committee. No reason for sdsu and the bison to be playing yet. East coast bias? Or is Patty V weak in promoting the conference?

    • The reason is quite clear. in fact, it’s in the playoff handbook for FCS football. if the NCAA can pay for a bus ride instead of a plane trip, they will throw all other reasoning out the window and pair teams accordingly.

      • If they are that cheap they should just cut the playoffs to the top 4 seeds and let them play for it.

If you aren’t going to seed the teams and do it right you shouldn’t be having a playoff system.

By the way how much is it costing to fly Wagner out to the west coast? Wagner should be at NDSU.

      • Let me fix their bracket based on close proximity games (the excuse used to pit SDSU against the Bison, possibly):

        Wofford vs Georgia Southern

Central Arkansas vs. Sam Houston State winner to play Montana State

Illinois State vs South Dakota State winner to play the Bison

Cal Poly vs Eastern Illinoii winner to play Eastern Washington

New Hampshire vs Villanova winner to play Old Dominion

        Colgate vs Stony Brook

        Wagner vs Bethune Cookman

I guess since it is the playoffs and you have to face the good teams eventually they may as well happen in the first 2 rounds huh? At least we would save travel money with this bracket.

  9. SDSU won, so I will repeat what I said in an earlier blog post. In college football, when two teams are closely matched like NDSU and SDSU, it is virtually impossible for the same team to win both games, as in Alabama and LSU last year. Advantage SDSU. This is just the way it is unfortunately. Hopefully the Bison can come back and win it all in 2013.

  10. Hey Oldguy, the Bison will win, the game is at the FargoDome. The biggest crowd in the FargoDome history will carry the Bison to a victory!

    • Biggest game in history for the Dakotas and The Big Three Dakota schools. Certainly the biggest game for SDSU. For The Bison biggest game ever at the Prestigious and Fabulious Fargo Dome! What a difference this is from the old D2 days. Just think what a mistake the Big Sky would have been!

There is an anomaly in the stats. Last game a huge Bison victory was predicted by the matrix. Game was much closer than anticipated. SDSU 2 will include the results from The Marker game so I’m expecting a closer score with a Bison win.
