DeShawn Dinwiddie: the hope is KU

NDSU backup linebacker DeShawn Dinwiddie, who quit the team last week, said he eventually hopes to transfer to the University of Kansas so he can play near his family.

Dinwiddie, in an email, said he plans to enroll at Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan., because he has to sit out a year anyway because of NCAA transfer rules. He played as a true freshman for NDSU in 2011, but his playing time the last two seasons mostly consisted on special teams.

“I’m transferring because me and the new linebacker coach (Steve Stanard) didn’t click and I’m homesick,” he wrote. “I want to make it easier for my family to make it to my games.”

His brother, backup running back Deveon Dinwiddie, also left the Bison last week. A junior, he may transfer to a Division II school for his final year of eligibility.

  1. Good luck to both kids. If their hearts weren’t in it they were doing a disservice to themselves and the team by sticking around. I wish them the best.

  2. These things happen and so many times it is not related to playing time, but more about being away from home. That is why you have to respect guys like DJ McNorton and Warren Holloway and so many others who come from many miles away. Not only do they sacrifice family time, but they grow up real fast and have a lot of focus on the ultimate outcome.
Another subject related to team is if you were to look at all the FCS stats throughout the country. You will see very few individual Bison leaders in the the top 20 in any categories. Team stats are different and that is huge. These guys know this and the coaches have done a great job of pointing to the Program.
Good luck to the Dinwiddie fellas and go Bison. Put the gas to it and finish up in Frisco.

  3. Transferring UP because of lack of playing time and conflicts with position coach? Mmmmmkay…

  4. I guess Deveon could end up with Northwest Missouri State, Pittsburg State or another school from the MIAA. Maybe Steve Laqua should try and get him…he would be very good there.

You do have to remember you are talking about KU, I’m not sure their football program is a step up from the Bison.

I thought I heard the new linebackers coach had fit in very well. The group that has been playing has been very good so I would assume that he has done a very good job.

  5. I always wondered , ….with the Bison defense ranked #1 in the country…why our Running Backs are unable to find a hole and run for 20-30 yards instead of getting swallowed , beaten and banged up by opposition defense….Now I know

  6. Good luck to the young men. The one player that wants to go D2 might be a good prospect for “The Muss” to recruit. He is still in Fargo so it would be an inexpensive trip down and the roster, if he signs, would look national!

    • I should clarify, not what I heard about why they “left”. Do you seriously believe they were homesick when your with your brother everyday? More to it.

  7. Leave a NC team to go 70 miles the wrong direction from Family and be a feature back in a smaller school. Like the rumors when Jose left? Grasping at straws.

      • One of the schools is Virtually larger for sure. Muss can show him the nickel if, that is, Jeff will loan it to him. That will be the closer. Recruiting coup. Program saved.
