Bison Video Blog: PostGame Show vs Wofford

Tremendous environment and a great game Saturday for the FCS quarterfinal between NDSU and Wofford. Two teams that didnt want to give an inch, came down to the very end as well. NDSU guts out a 14-7 win and in the process sends them to the FCS Semifinals and a rematch with Georgia Southern, with the winner going to Frisco. Not much more can be said about the great game Grant Olson turned in a school record 29 tackles and a place in Bison playoff history. Jeff, Eric and I break down the game and have comments with Craig Bohl, Anthony Lavoy, Grant Olson and Brock Jensen as NDSU wins for the 12th time in 13 games. This is just the start of our big weekend, back tomorrow with full NDSU-UND hoops coverage on the blog.

  1. What a game today.

“Grant Olson had 29 tackles for North Dakota State. Twenty freaking nine. That’s more than any Division I player since 2005. Holy Christ”…Todd Shanesy‏@TerrierTracker

Brock ….uh…at it again throwing pick 6. He is a nice guy but for a National Championship level QB, he should not doing this. During big games we have to be perfect, small mistakes like this can cost us really bad. We were lucky because Wofford was a 1 dimensional team, just passing to that Big Chubby RB. Talking about him, he is is really a beast. On a open field it took 4-6 bison defenders to bring him down. He was really the force of nature.

I feel that Brock prefers throwing to Ryan Smith a lot more that TVG or Zac Vraa or Nate Moody..etc, he should mix it up a bit by throwing to other players too, if not he is becoming more predictable.

Had it not been for the Bison Defense this game would have been long gone. Wofford had the ball twice near Bison 10 yard line. But we were lucky because a) They are fumble prone team b) They were very one dimensional- heavily relying in Big Chubby, so we somehow made it even with all that pick 6 and John Crockett the Rocket’s fumble.

John Crockett’s fumble surprised me, i knew he was pretty solid RB …but anyway….

We cannot do these type of mistakes against any remaining teams, from now on every single mistake can cost us the championship.

  2. The basketball game is meaningless except for the folks still fanning the flames of a rivalry, as ugly as that was.

    • so genius, what do you suggest? just not even cover the other sports when they happen to play against UND? you are the worst example of a bison fan. please go cheer for USD from now on; you’re an embarassment to true ndsu fans.

      • You mad bro? It was pathetic listening to the rival talk on the broadcast. UND is a meaningless game for Dakota schools. Without the chicken wings stand 5,000 ticket giveaway it’s just another game in the FFD.

  3. Grant Olson: “…I missed some things.” What?! Beause 29 tackles isn’t enough.

Jensen did redeem himself a little in my eyes, despite another dumb interception. He’s still not a superstar quarterback, but as long as he does his job and not play too arrogantly, another Championship is in sight.

    • Agreed. Our Bison defense is something to behold but I hold my breath when we are on offense.

  4. If you are interested in hearing how fans in the dome impacted the other team, watch Wofford’s post-game show: http://www.youtube.com/user/woffordathletics. Some interesting comments from some folks who thought that they had played in some tough places before. According to one of their players, the dome trumped the experience at South Carolina with their 80,000+ fans. The Bison are going to need the “12th man” again this Friday night against another tough offense. Probably not as stout of a defense, but our offense will need to be on its game.

My guess is that Georgia Southern thinks that by playing in the dome last year, they will be ready for it on Friday. I don’t know if SDSU would agree, after their two opportunities.

On offense, I know myself, as well as others, would like to see more excitement. After hearing from Wofford though, I think the smash mouth, up the middle running, is probably what is actually working. Doesn’t have the excitement of the long passes, but it is our physical play that seems to surprise opposing defenses. SDSU would attest to that as well, I imagine.

  5. It appears that teams playing triple options dont throw long passes. They keep the ball on the ground and chew up the clock.

In situations like this, Bison getting the ball is a premium and and any little opportunity that we get we should try to convert to points. We cannot offord to do any mistake , like offense did against Wofford.

Bison offense hardly touched the ball the entire second half , may be only once during that John Crockett run, thats it. So Bison offense has to play smart offense.

  6. GSU has an effective passing game, unlike Wofford. With Jensen continuing his implosion one has to wonder if they can score enough points to be in the semifinal game.
