It’s hard to find many schools that have a better postseason record than North Dakota State; the Bison have racked up a 45-14 all-time playoff record; that includes a 10-1 mark in the FCS playoffs and leads us to today’s stat:
Countdown To 2013 NerdStat #54:
- 14: As mentioned earlier; those are the playoff losses that NDSU has suffered both in its Division 1 and 2 days and some can argue more people will remember those games than the 45 wins that the Bison have racked up over that same time period. You can start in 1982 in the D-2 Semis; where future Jet great Ken O’Brien led Cal Davis to a 19-14 win over the Bison, but NDSU had a chance to win the game in the final seconds; the only loss of that season. Many fans I know will remember the 1984 Championship Game with Troy State; because that loss disrupted a dynasty; Troy State kicking a game winning 50 yard field goal with no time left that was the only title game loss for NDSU in a four year stretch; winning titles in ’83, ’85 and ’86, something that this current class is chasing with a title run this year. In the early to mid 90’s there were more close playoff defeats; the 1992 Quarterfinals a 38-37 overtime loss to Pittsburg State and a 9-7 defeat to the Gorillas in the ’95 Quarters. That of course leads into another gut-wrencher for NDSU and that’s the 2010 FCS Quarters; where the Bison fell behind 14-0 to Eastern Washington to eventually take a 31-24 lead on the Eagles before EWU rallied to tie and eventually win the game in overtime. It’s hard to play in so many postseason games and not have a few blowouts; but at least in the last 30 years that’s the case for NDSU; a 27-7 loss to Mankato; a double digit defeat to Northwest Missouri and the 2000 semifinals to Delta State were the only ones I could find going back 30 years where the Bison were truly handled. One of the more impressive stats on the countdown in my mind.
