2013 Countdown: #95

As the countdown rolls on to the start of the 2013 football season; tonight’s NerdStats tries to draw some historical comparison to what this senior class has a chance to accomplish.

Grant Olson makes a tackle; one of the 26 seniors on the 2013 NDSU roster.

Countdown To 2013: NerdStat Number 95:

  • 26; that’s the number of seniors on the current Bison roster for 2013; this was the team that Craig Bohl had pegged several years ago that could break thru and win the school’s first FCS Championship. Guess they were a couple years early. But that also leads to my discussion point tonight; is where will this senior class rank in NDSU history? Let’s say the Bison win another FCS championship; that’s 3 title in 4 years; matchingwhat the unreal teams did from 1985-88 when they won 3 titles over a 4 year span and had great names like Simdorn; Favor and Bentrim. This team is littered with stars similar to that gauntlet of a team with Jensen, Williiams, Olson and Turner. The biggest reason in my mind that NDSU has a shot to win a third straight FCS Championship is because of this senior leadership; the fact that they have played 44 games over a three year span (see NerdStat Number 97) and have been thru three seasons of preparing to make a long run. But that also could backfire as well; many Bison fans will point to the 2008 team; one that was considered loaded with talent; bringing back many good players from a 10-1 team that struggled to a 6-5 record. Chemistry is the biggest thing and that’s something to watch when fall camp begins.
