Bison Video Blog: New Year’s Day Edition

New Year’s Day has traditionally been a day dedicated to college football and today was no different in Fargo; especially after news circulated last night that starting middle linebacker Grant Olson was in the hospital. Craig Bohl stated today that he will travel to Frisco and looks probable to play Saturday against Sam Houston State. The other large news was that Bohl signed an 8 year extension today that will keep him in Fargo thru 2021, that’s a long time folks, and means you can kiss goodbye thoughts of leaving for a MAC, Sun Belt, WAC or C-USA job. More details with Jeff and I here, and our coverage from Frisco begins tomorrow!

  1. One of two things. Either its a preemptive move by NDSU, or the past at Nebraska has caught up with Mr. Bohl. All other very successful coaches at the FCS (IAA) level have been given a shot at the higher level. Higher level AD’s must not want to deal with that sort of controversy.

Yet, I guess Petrino did get another chance after similar transgressions.

  2. I’m very happy NDSU has locked Coach Bohl up for the foreseeable future. He is a great coach and he runs his program right. He is very respected in the coaching ranks and he has produced numerous coaches at the high levels.

As for the greatest head coach from NDSU he is getting there. If he wins this national championship and makes it back and wins next years he is a since. The one thing Ron Erhardt has on him is how many successful years he spent in the NFL. Ron Erhardt’s offensive innovations are still present in the NFL.

I’m ready for the game on Saturday!

  3. If the right job opens for him, he’s gone. I don’t think the MAC is a step up for him right now but another conference, like Conference USA, would certainly get his attention.

  4. The Coach is good. I think he is here to do more with this program than just win a couple FCS championships. Darrell Mudra, Ron Erhardt, Don Morton, Rocky Hager, these are the great names in the modern era. Put in Bob Babich too. First coach to bring in bigtime talent and transitioned us from the option. Now Coach Bohl is writing his legacy. This is another Golden Age of Bison Football.

    • Coach Bohl is 54 years old. If a BCS school is going to come calling it better happen soon.

With all the movement in college football and the current state of the Bison football program, Coach Bohl could end up coaching the Bison as a FBS school.

      • Yes, I’m sure that could be the case. Maybe the Big Dakota Three can all move to the now depleted Big 12. Good insightful speculation. A win in the title game on Saturday could mean a lot for the Big Dakota Three. I’m sure we will have SDSU and USD cheering us on. UNO fans as well. All four schools would give the Big 12 some stability.

Go Thundering Herd! Hail the Bison! \ , , /

        • I don’t think USD could make the move with NDSU & SDSU, The Mighty Land Grants. UNO doesn’t have football. It’s more likely The Mighty Land Gants accept the Big 12 invite and UND rejoins the Dakotas in the MVFC and Summit league.

  5. Craig Bohl’s pay is more than the President of NDSU :-) its all good…for all the good things he has done to NDSU and continuing to do for NDSU….

  6. An eight year contract is a clear signal to recruits that Bohl wants to stay in Fargo.

Its funny how fans of other teams think they know what it would take to get Bohl to sign elsewhere. None of us know which team would be attractive enough to get him to move on. My guess is that it would have to be a Big 12, Big 10 or Missouri from the SEC.

  7. Coach Bohl has found the winning recipe here in NDSU, I think its better if he continues to improvise that recipe, its good for him and good for us.

Its a lot of risk starting new elsewhere.

  8. I have to think there’s some serious talk now about how to move NDSU to FBS.
An eight year contract extension suggests that to me. I think Bohl is the coach to make that transition, if that decision’s made. My speculation is FBS is in NDSU’s future.
But then again, if the right offer comes along, we’ll be looking for another coach, without a doubt. I don’t know under what circumstance, when, or who it’d be but if Bohl keeps winning, someone is going to make him an offer. Then he has a decision to make; stay and convert NDSU to BCS or move on. Eight years tells me he intends to stay awhile (and lead the football program to FBS).

  9. Face it, coach is getting black balled by fbs schools. 25 openings and not 1 interview? Its obvious. What better way for coach bohl to rub it in thier faces than take NDSU FBS and beat those teams. I love that motivation.

    • You have no idea whether coach has interviewed or not. He may have interviewed and we just don’t know it.

  10. Its starting to look like The Bison pep rally in Frisco Tx, 1,200 miles south, will draw as many North Dakota Sports fans as a typical UND hockey game at their big rink in Grand Forks. That’s saying something about Bison Football, the State of North Dakota and the traditions we share among the Dakota Big Three!
