Shawn Bibeau walked out of NDSU’s Metrodome locker room and onto the field to face some reporters. Just the fact the freshman kicker had the maturity to do so — after his last-second field goal against the Gophers was blocked — says a lot.
He handled the questions like a champ and moved on.
It was a tough loss. The opponent, meanwhile, was not very impressive.
The hardest hit by anybody in Minneapolis on Saturday was not delivered by a Gopher player at the Metrodome. No, it was a young punk who threw a right hook at my jaw a couple of football fields from my downtown Minneapolis hotel after the game. Totally random violence. Not sure if he was getting revenge for a couple of Bison fans passionately yelling at Sid in the press box or what. Or maybe it was a Bison fan thinking I was McFeely.
It was around 8 p.m. and I was walking to dinner when the next thing I can remember is the pavement. There were people milling around all over the place. I recall Bill Kiefer — a Bison fan who happened to be in the area asking me if I was all right. He helped me into a cab and by then the fog was lifting.
I’m fine other than a sore jaw. Just makes you appreciate Nacogdoches, Texas and Statesboro, Ga.
