It is the first day of football season, but got a few basketball tidbits wanted to pass on by: Spoke with Liz Keena on the phone this afternoon, she’s the first verbal recruit for Carolyn DeHoff for the 2011 season. She’s going to be a senior this year at Hastings High School, she averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds a game this past season for a team that went 2-25. Keena said that her team plays in a tough conference and most squads game planned against her. Keena came up last January for the SDSU game and said she was impressed with the fans and atmosphere of a women’s basketball game. She has family in the area, her parents are originally from Barnesville…she had strong interest from Northern Iowa. Was also up at the BSA yesterday to see the incoming Bison freshmen men work out for a story we’re working on for next week. Taylor Baxter, Marshall Bjorklund and Trayvonn Wright are all HUGE…and all have gained weight in the 2 months since they’ve been in Fargo. Baxter and Bjorklund told me that there’s a good chance that they’ll see the floor this fall. Look for that story next week on WDAY.

Spoke to Saul Phillips for a minute today….Still joking around after a week and a half of practice, so things must be going pretty well!

Seriously, he said no injuries…Woody and Winks look phenomenal, and DeJuan is really coming along.  Stronger finishing and defensively than maybe he might have predicted.

Also told me in another conversation recently that the transfer guard from UNI Lundborg is really showing well, too.

Jeff’s comment on Eric Carlson reminded me of a conversation I had a few days ago with a "tied in" person on Bison BB.  Don’t believe all the press clippings and hoopscoop dot coms, the only 2 kids Miles has offered are Carlson and Noah Dahlman.

Amy told me at the Midcon press conference that there is another former Colorado State player that transferred to NDSU with Ashley Samuelson that could be really good too, but both will likely be ineligible this year.  Dont’ get me started on that again.

A couple stray Midcon thoughts:  First, as great as this news is for most of the coaches, the Big Sky is still the best league out there for NDSU as a whole, because of football.  I’ve said it many times, basketball gets you the notoriety, football gets you the money.  And in teh Big Sky there are automatic bids.  The Great West has 3 great programs, one good one and one also-ran (SUU).  But the conference as a whole, because of it’s size, is a bit of a joke.  If you ask Gene and Craig, I bet they’re secretly hoping this Midcon alignment will one day lead to an invite to the Gateway.  Add the dakota schools to get to 10?  Just look at how the affiliations and friendships with Douple led to the Midcon thing–could happen in football when all these guys get to know each other.
