A follow-up comment on the IUPUI complaint of poor fan behavior at the NDSU men’s game on Thursday night: I didn’t see anything, or hear anything, but that’s not unusual since I sit across the way right by the best band in The Summit League. And during a game, my job has me constantly on this laptop thanks to live blog, Web quick file, tight deadlines and trying to keep track of what is happening on the floor.
That being said, I’m not surprised. Treating college basketball like a minor league baseball game just doesn’t mix. It was just a few people on Thursday but that’s all it takes and by the way, these are in some instances college teenagers they were yelling at, not draft choices who earned a signing bonus. And any direction toward racial comments — boot them. I have no tolerance for that.
The problem has its issues at other Summit schools, if not nationwide. At the NDSU at South Dakota State games, I sit directly in front of the student section and some years they’re funny, this year they were not. It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Summit to mandate security/babysitters behind every opposing bench. You’re never going to eliminate the issue, but at least there would be some buffer there.
