Craig Bohl Pushed the Facility Envelope

Craig Bohl Pushed the Facility Envelope

You gotta love living around here in the winter. This week, the high temperatures will be in the single digits with the weekend not getting out of negative digits. So on this week, let’s all take time to remember the Bison football coaches of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, who had to coach practice outside in November and December when the Fargodome was being used. The Dacotah Field bubble came into the mix in time for the 2014 playoff run, but some of those winter outdoor workouts before that structure was built had to be a brutal.

Those of us who covered the first FCS playoff experience by any Bison team in 2010 will not soon forget the harsh weather that hit the area while NDSU was preparing for the second round game at Montana State. The Bison literally practiced in those conditions at one point in their outdoor practice history, a photo that is published above. One thing about Craig Bohl: the guy pushed the envelope on NDSU getting Division I-like facilities. He lobbied hard for football offices in the Fargodome, a project that was iffy it was ever going to be fully funded. It eventually was. He pushed hard for the Fieldturf on Dacotah Field, a project that fell behind schedule much to his dismay, but was eventually finished.

Bohl did a lot of upgrades that people probably will never know. The locker room complex at the dome became a Bison home under his tenure. He was the one who insisted NDSU fly the Delta Airlines charter service, not any smaller outfit that isn’t always reliable. When NDSU football hits the friendly skies on a Friday, there is rarely a minute out of place. It’s clockwork. This week, the Bison are preparing for a Friday blockbuster against James Madison University in the FCS semifinals. There will be no outdoor practice for NDSU, that much is certain.
