Danneka Voegeli

Danneka Voegeli

Danneka Voegeli isn’t a name Bison fans know right now, but they very will might in two years time. NDSU women’s basketball coach Maren Walseth is banking on it. The Bison received their first verbal commitment for the class of 2017 on Thursday from the Winona (MN) sophomore.

Voegeli was on campus this week at an NDSU camp and made it official yesterday. She just completed her sophomore year at Winona, averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds a game. She’s a 6’2 post and plays for the Minnesota Fury AAU team, one of the top girls travel teams in the state. Her head coach Tim Gleason told me yesterday that interest in Voegeli started to spike this spring with South Dakota State and Green Bay also showing interest.

This is a bold move by Walseth getting a verbal commitment this early from a player that still has two years of high school to go. It’s similar to what the men did with North’s Siman Sem. Get in early and hope that they continue to progress to the player they can be. It’s also a promising sign for NDSU fans that Walseth is hitting Minnesota hard. Gleason told me that NDSU had not been seen in the state in a while, but with Walseth being from Bloomington, she understands the type of players the state has.

NDSU now has two verbals for the next two classes; Maple Valley (ND) guard Rylee Nudell for the class of 2016, who can become the all-time leading scorer in North Dakota history next year and now Voegeli for ’17.
