Dragon tales

The folks over at Minnesota State Moorhead seem to have forgotten a basic principle in managing an athletic department: the fans.

The administration has continually refused our request for interviews as to why athletic director Alfonso Scandrett was reassigned, i.e. fired. Now, if I am Joe Fan and Barry Booster, I do believe I would want to know why the university I support canned its A.D. The administration OWES them that much.

There’s a certain obligation public universities have to the taxpayers and that is accountability. The public deserves to know what’s going on and that’s where we, the media, come in. It is our job to tell them.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the river, the folks over at NDSU have a good understanding of this. In the several years I have covered Bison athletics, they have followed an open book policy — something that has been to their advantge over the long term.
