Gateway Q&A

Gateway Q&A

I’ll attempt to answer the following question:

Steve or Jeff, do either of you know if NDSU is being sought after by the Gateway? The reason I ask is because of the quote below in a newpaper article…."Strollo said that the Gateway Conference is looking very seriously into expansion in the near future, but it will be very selective.

Finding the right institution will be the key. "It would be nice [to expand] and it certainly would help out our scheduling problems," Strollo said. "

Until something drastic happens with the league — either Western Kentucky leaves for I-A or Indiana State drops football — only then will NDSU be "sought after." There has been communication between NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor and Gateway commissioner Patty Viverito, but we’ve reported that and those "talks" were not much to get excited about.

The Gateway has been one of the most stable leagues in the country. Only one team has left — Eastern Illinois to the Ohio Valley — since the league’s inception in the 1980s. This is not a group that is expansion-happy.

So until there’s movement within the league, the only thing anybody can do is speculate. One common denominator among all leagues concerning the issue of expansion is they don’t normally add any teams until somebody leaves.
