It was about three weeks ago when Beau Eastes from The Spectrum called me. The Spectrum? Didn’t know the university newspaper published in the summer. Ah, turns out it’s The Spectrum daily newspaper out of St. George, Utah.
I’ve read it on-line over the past few years; it covers Southern Utah athletics. Anyway, Beau was doing some research on a Division I conference story involving Southern Utah and Utah Valley State.
I find it a long shot that Southern Utah will be a contender for Big Sky membership. The Thunderbirds were up for election when Northern Colorado got in and were promptly denied. Think about it: they got denied over a school that was still going through a reclassification.
I’ve blogged the reason before and I’ll do it again: As one Big Sky president once told a a Big Sky beat reporter (off the record): Southern Utah will get in over my dead body.
The Big Sky presidents do not like Southern Utah’s academic standing — whatever that may be.
