After the Ball State game, the prevailing opinion was the NDSU defensive backfield needed some work. There was experience at safety with senior Craig Dahl, but free safety Nick Schommer and cornerback Richard Bowman were sophomores and a couple of backups were freshmen. David Earl is a junior, but he’s still relatively new to the position having switched there from offense a couple of years ago.
Ball State exposed NDSU’s youth and hit on some long pass plays. But since then, the d-backs have buckled down. Those long bombs have disappeared.
Last week at Georgia Southern, Courtney Mitchell’s interception and subsequent run for a touchdown was about as athletic of a play I’ve seen a Bison cornerback make in a long time. Kind of reminded me of the days when Tyrone Braxton could go vertical and pull in some picks.
