He’ll Be There, Somehow

He’ll Be There, Somehow

Carson Wentz was spotted in the Minneapolis airport. Carson Wentz was spotted at Hector International in Fargo. Yes, the former Bison quarterback now turned national phenom with the Philadelphia Eagles has a bye week and that’s the life of a sports star: if you walk around in public, it won’t take the public long to notice you. He knows this, of course, and nothing Wentz has done in the last year has been by accident. I’ve said that all along, from signing with Ryan Tollner’s agency in Irvine, Calif., to the NFL Draft to tweeting about being locked in a gas station bathroom  — hey Philly fans, it can happen to anyone, I’m just a regular guy. Every step, every detail has been discussed and figured out. How else do you explain Wentz wearing his Scheels Outfitters cap in both airports? He has a Scheels endorsement deal. The young man is smart, in football and in street cred.

The question that the Bison peeps are wondering is if he’s going to be at the game Saturday when the Bison host Illinois State on homecoming. Head coach Chris Klieman and a Wentz family member both said on Monday that a decision has yet to be made.

Let me put it another way: Wentz has consistently talked about his Bison teammates being “his brothers.” He’s best friends with starting quarterback Easton Stick and backup Cole Davis, both of whom attended the draft in Chicago. It would be very surprising if Carson doesn’t take the Eagles bye week and watch his bros play in person, unless there’s some other commitment he can’t get out of. It’s really a matter of how: how can he do it in a sane manner? He can’t walk through the front door at the Fargodome because, well, he won’t get through the front door. Stealthiness has to be of the essence. It’s doubtful you’ll find him hanging out at West Acres Mall or Chub’s Pub.

The best guess is he’ll go hunting or fishing or both this week where there are no people. It’s what he does anyway and the weather this week is perfect fall North Dakota temps for both. If you want to get away from the Philly sports scene, no better place than western North Dakota. The best guess is he’ll return on Saturday, low key and without fanfare, until the lights go out at Gate City Bank Field and “Thunderstruck” goes into action. The doors open and Klieman and Wentz lead the team onto the field.

Now that would throw everybody into a tizzy and perhaps be the greatest tunnel walk in the history of Bison tunnel walks. It would turn this one, the Craig Bohl version, to second place on the all-time charts.
