Joe Chapman was a little bit into his comments during the Mid-Continent Conference press conference last week when he looked at the motley crew with cameras and pens:
"I will say to my colleagues in the news media: What are we going to talk about now?"
Nobody had an answer. He’s right. From a reporter’s perspective, the NDSU president means nothing to me right now, unless the Gateway Football Conference begins looking for another member.
At every happenstance run-in with Chapman, I couldn’t help but ask the same junk over and over. Hey, what’s new with the Big Sky? Talked to Gamble? Heard from Fullerton? What about Mid-Con? Chicago State in trouble? What does that mean? When? Why? Where? How?
For the most part, Chapman’s front-and-center role with athletics is over unless there’s some scandal, newsworthy firing or something out of the ordinary. His one big task was to get NDSU into a conference and he’s done that.
Next time I run into Mr. President, I may have to ask him how his model airplanes are flying.
