Oh to be Benny

Oh to be Benny

Some random babble as I put a long and bizarre day to bed.

It occurs to me that the only guy who comes out of today on a magic carpet is Benny Moss.  He comes in late, gets the job, and the people there may carry him into the city on their shoulders.  He was the people’s choice.  As for Tim, he’s doing fine, nice new paycheck, still in a good situation, but make no mistake–this was exactly what Tim wanted, except it got messy.  Kind of like getting your favorite steak served to you on a garbage can lid.  When I saw him today I told him I was glad he was sticking around, but sad in a way for him that a good professional opportunity didn’t work out.  For him there will be another UNCW, but one that’s much cleaner and much better managed.  To make a move like this when you’re in a decent spot, you need the sun on your face AND the wind at your back and he couldn’t ever find that combination.

It seemed like every time the sailing was clear, something weird happened–new candidates brought in late, search committee going unany for another guy, etc.  As for Capaccio, he gets his number 2 choice, but a guy the people wanted and the satisfaction of knowing he fumbled away the chance to get his man.  In trying to please everyone he brought in a search committee (mistake 1) and a 4th and 5th candidate (mistake 2).

Has there ever been a more quotable coach than Miles?  If he called a press conference to talk about wart removal I’d go.

I have to admit I’m somewhat disappointed for Saul and Koering.  If Tim had gone, both would have been looking at interesting opportunities here or at UNCW.

I have to believe that job possibilities will come Tim’s way every spring.  Maybe they’re not all this good, but this isn’t his last rodeo.

Man, 115K sounds like a pretty good living.  I’d even let Gene keep the camp money and pay for my own car.  Maybe Tim can build his own arena.

Having a cohesive team really helps when your coach is flirting with another job.  Besides Andre, everyone on that team came in with some company to grow up with.  When there’s more togetherness, it’s easier to say "we’ll be fine whatever happens, cause we got us."

Was Jim Molinari really on Gene’s short list?

When Monson leaves the U in 11 months will Miles get serious consideration?

Could he have done PA and Dubay from Wilmington?

Scotty and Trevor interviewed Ben Woodside today and said he looked like a linebacker.  Much iron pump, and it’s only been 6 weeks since they quit playing.   They might have to keep him out of the weight room or the San Francisco Chronicle is going to start getting nosy.
