A couple videos with Dante’s mission that are worth your time

The more I cover athletics and the older I get, the more important guys like Dante Perez seem to a team. Here’s the column.

Here are a couple of videos on the camp that are worth your time:

QBs beginning to separate

It appears a line has been drawn at the quarterback position as far as the No. 4 quarterback and it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Senior Dante Perez was working at both receiver and quarterback Wednesday in the 7-on-7 portion of spring practice. It wasn’t a great throwing day for the QBs with cold, gusty winds. Freshman Esley Thorton struggled with accuracy at times, although that by no means doesn’t indicate he is still not part of the starting picture. I think it’s going to come down to the spring game as to who will enter fall ball as the No. 1 guy.

Other stuff:

  • It wasn’t the best day for the wide receivers, either, in 7 on 7s with fullback Andrew Grothmann, receivers Cooper Wahlo and Perez and tight ends Kevin Vaadeland and Taylor Nelson all having drops.
  • I don’t think I’ve seen Ryan Smith, who’s being converted from running back, drop a pass this spring.
  • Receiver Tevin Pittman, a 6-3 redshirt freshman from Osceola, Wis., is sidelined with a pulled hamstring.
  • Freshman defensive end Kyle Emanuel was working with the No. 1 defense in 1 vs. 1 team play. He alternated with senior Scott Stoczynski with Stoczynski also seeing time at defensive tackle.
  • Sophomore Ryan Drevlow appears to be the No. 1 noseguard.
  • Friday’s practice has been postponed to another day.

Jacobs’ career in limbo; Perez could be moved

The career of one of the top recruits from the 2009 recruiting class could be over. Offensive lineman Hank Jacobs will miss spring football for the second straight year and this time, a back injury could finish him for his career, said head coach Craig Bohl in his pre-spring ball interview with The Forum/WDAY.

Jacobs was a second team all-state selection at Beaver Dam High School in Wisconsin, but to date was not a threat to see much playing time. “He’s been a guy either because of injuries has not been able to go out there and compete,” Bohl said.

The 6-foot-4, 284-pound Jacobs missed last spring because of shoulder surgery. On the other side of the depth chart, Bohl said sophomore Jeff Jerve had an impressive off-season and will challenge for a starting spot at tackle.

Also, Bohl said backup quarterback Dante Perez could get a look at another position, possibly receiver or defensive back. Asked if there’s a timeline to that thought, he said, “We’ll look at how these guys come out the first couple of days and make a decision.”

Perez, a senior, was the No. 3 quarterback last fall and played sparingly.

One defensive player not previously mentioned who may get a shot at seeing the field is defensive tackle/noseguard Anthony LaVoy, a transfer from Bemidji State. A 2009 graduate of Mahnomen and part of the family of football players (his uncles Tim and Rick played at NDSU), he’s built himself up to 280 pounds.
