A Division I first for wrestling: Bison in top 25 poll

NDSU accomplished something on Tuesday that it never has in wrestlnig: a top 25 Division I ranking. The Bison were 24th this week in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. The impetus was a 24-15 dual victory last week over previously-24th ranked Boise State.

Individually, a couple of Bison are climbing in the Amateur Wrestling News weight class ratings. Senior Trent Sprenkle moved up to sixth at 125 pounds and junior Steven Monk is eighth at 165. Senior Mac Stoll is 17th at 184 pounds. All three are returning national tournament qualifiers from a year ago.

The University of Minnesota remained in first place in the top 25 with seven first place votes. Penn State was next with three votes. The Bison are sandwiched between No. 23 Purdue and No. 25 Old Dominion. There’s still some ranked opponents ahead for NDSU, which hosts the Gophers Saturday in the NDSU Quadrangular at the Bison Sports Arena. NDSU also has No. 15 Oregon State at home on Dec. 9. The Bison are at No. 7 Missouri and No. 19 Wyoming this season.

Sprenkle, Salminen drop first round matches

NDSU wrestlers Vince Salminen and Trent Sprenkle both dropped their opening-round matches at the NCAA Division I Championships Thursday at the Wells Center.

Sprenkle gave up a third period two-point takedown to 11th-seeded Frank Perelli of Cornell in a 4-3 loss at 125 pounds. Salminen had his roughest loss of the season getting pinned in 32 seconds by Walter Peppelman of Harvard in their 157-pound bout. Peppelman was also seeded 11th.

Both were scheduled for wrestleback matches Thursday night.
