The Top 25 Poll: Some New Blood

The Top 25 Poll: Some New Blood

It’s early but it’s also a refreshing poll in the sense of a few of teams making early waves like Howard University. Quick, where is Howard located? It’s in Washington, D.C. and new coach Mike London is 1-1 after two FBS games, including giving Kent State all it could handle last week in dropping a 38-31 decision. Don’t forget London once won an FCS title at Richmond. The Bison opened the season with a win at UNLV. Tennessee State is also up there with an FBS win, albeit Georgia State. TSU followed it up with a less-impressive 17-15 win over Jackson State of the SWAC, but an FBS victory this early is still worth something. And how about New Hampshire? The Wildcats are looking to get back in the CAA title picture and a 22-12 win at FBS Georgia Southern is a pretty good start after a one-point opening-weekend win over Maine. We’ve been to Georgia Southern, which takes winning very serious in Statesboro, Ga. The wolves have to be howling there today.

South Dakota is off to an impressive early start getting an FBS win of its own — at Bowling Green. Not a good weekend for the MAC, which continues to digress in relation to the upper level of the FCS.  JMU continues to be the class of the division, but NDSU Bizon made some headway in the cred department dismantling Eastern Washington on the road. In the interest of full disclosure, here is my weekly ballot to the top 25 poll.

  1. James Madison (2-0)
  2. North Dakota State (2-0)
  3. New Hampshire (2-0)
  4. South Dakota State (2-0)
  5. South Dakota (2-0)
  6. Sam Houston State (2-0)
  7. Jacksonville State (2-0)
  8. Villanova (1-1)
  9. Youngstown State (1-1)
  10. North Dakota (1-1)
  11. Howard (1-1)
  12. Tennessee State (2-0)
  13. The Citadel (2-0)
  14. Western Illinois (2-0)
  15. Wofford (2-0)
  16. Richmond (1-1)
  17. Illinois State (1-0)
  18. Northern Iowa (1-1)
  19. Nicholls (1-1)
  20. Samford (2-0)
  21. Colgate (1-1)
  22. Weber State (1-1)
  23. William & Mary (1-1)
  24. North Carolina A&T (2-0)
  25. Eastern Washington (0-2)

You give way to much credit for a FBS win, the MAC,Sun Belt, C-USA, and lower half of MWC are at best, decent FCS teams. As much as I like the USD win, Bowling Green couldn’t make the FCS playoffs the last couple of years.

Izzo does the same. Anyone who watched the Bowling Green v USD game could see just how bad the MAC is. If they were in the MVFC they finish with MSU and ISUb.

I would say that the value of an FBS win is high in my mind. Has the MAC struggled lately? Yep. Top of the MAC is still pretty good. And USD dominated that game until the 4th quarter. That’s why I voted USD where I did. That’s why Howard, Tennessee State move up. When 63 beats 85 it’s always impressive. Especially how JMU did it.

I agree. Most of these wins are over bad G5 teams that won’t even make bowl games. Does anyone really believe Howard is a top 20 FCS team???

    Isn’t JSU 1-1?

Yes; JSU is 1 – 1. I think Howard will steadily drop this season. Otherwise, I do like your poll voting.
