The Xs and Os of the Top Two FCS Defenses

The Xs and Os of the Top Two FCS Defenses

Colgate heads into Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup with North Dakota State with the No. 1 scoring defense in the the Division I FCS statistics surrendering just 7.0 points per game. The Raiders are second in passing defense, fourth in rushing defense and tops in total defense. Those are some pretty impressive stats, no matter what league anybody plays in. Bison senior defensive end Greg Menard said his group can’t pay attention to that.

“I guess we really don’t listen to that too much,” he said. “We focus on stopping their offense and our offense worries about scoring on their defense. We don’t read into that too much.”

Moreover, NDSU isn’t too shabby in those areas, either. The Bison are No. 2 in scoring defense giving up 12.0 points a game.

The Bison will have to deal with a Colgate option offense that is different from most in that quarterback Grant Breneman will keep the ball in a running back’s chest until the last possible second.

“You don’t know who has it the longer they get closer to the line of scrimmage,” Menard said. “The quarterback just keeps shuffling and if you don’t make him make a decision, he’ll just keep riding it almost to the sideline until you make him decide.”

On the flipside for NDSU, it will be the second straight game where it won’t face a potent passing attack. Last week, Montana State came to Gate City Bank Field the 114th-best passing offense in the FCS out of 123 teams. Colgate is No. 104.

Passing offense last week may not be statistically very good but the Bison were still asleep and gave up the longest pass play of the season.
