Former league partner in all sports and current NDSU foe in the Western Wrestling Conference Northern Colorado continues to struggle with the pocket book. That’s not a good sign at this stage in the school’s Division I life.
The cuts come despite the wrestling program having raised its own money to endow a good portion of its budget. Even more scary is the snail’s pace of growth in the UNC budget; it spent $4.1 million in its first year of Division I in 2003-04, according to a Forum story. Take inflation into account and the $6.4 million figure for ’07-08 can barely be considered an increase.
NDSU’s budget, meanwhile, has easily toppled $10 million. The Bison have done it by scouring the country for clients with an efficent fundraising force. You have to wonder: do the Bears have anybody that has come close to the fundraising job Erv Inniger has done at NDSU? I’ve seen Erv in more airports than I’ve been in airports.
