Upon Further Review, Favor and Cichy Get Their Honor

The committee to elect NDSU’s imagined Ring of Honor went into emergency session yesterday evening in light of the pleas for a couple more players who, if there was such a thing, should be included. Their reason: these two were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. So if they were good enough to be among the country’s best players, they should be good enough to have their jersey hanging from the Fargodome rafters, they said.

After careful deliberation, the committee agreed. So Mike Favor and Joe Cichy bring my Ring of Honor to nine members (see previous post).

Favor was a dominating center and two-time first team All-American in the 1980s who really didn’t have a national Division II offensive line award to grasp onto. There were two principle criteria: winner of the top honor in the country in their division and/or a standout college career plus some sort of supreme accomplishment in the NFL. We can add College Hall of Fame to this list.

  • 2 Joe Cichy
  • 57 Mike Favor

Cichy was also a two-time first team All-American on a team that was 29-0-1 in his three years ending in 1970. He was also the team’s backup quarterback in a testament to his athleticism.
